Each year, over 20,000 people look to the Minneapolis Urban League for assistance in overcoming barriers that prevent them from accessing quality employment, housing, education, social services, and health care. | JOB TITLE: Teacher - 1st & 2nd Grade | LOCATION: Twin Cities Metro | SALARY: 30,000 - 32,000 TYPE: Full Time / 38 hours DEADLINE: Open until filled PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under general supervisor, serves as classroom teacher in the Minneapolis Urban League Academy Elementary School to create a flexible instruction program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability. Establishes effective rapport with students assigned to the classroom. Motivates students to develop attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary grade education in accordance with each student’s ability, and instructs students in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth. Establishes good relationships with other staff members. Primary responsibilities include: * Making knowledge accessible to all students * Developing students cognitive capacity and respect for learning * Fostering students' self-esteem, motivation, and sense of civic responsibility. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The classroom teacher will meet all qualifications and behavior standards as set by the Minneapolis Public School District (MPS) and the Minneapolis Urban League (MUL). In accordance with certification requirements and the performance expectations of the MPS and the MUL, all classroom teachers shall meet the following employment criteria. * Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, including all courses to meet credential (licensing) requirements. * Valid Minnesota teaching license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned. * Completed credential file that meets MPS standards. * Professional verification of successful classroom teacher performance and/or student teaching experience. * Evidence of the willingness and the ability to comply with the standards for ethical and professional performance established by the State Board of Education. * Interview/file data will include evidence of sensitivity and respect for others and verification of the demonstrated ability to serve as a positive role model for youth. * Regular and predictable attendance is essential. * Training in behavior management. * Training in student assessment techniques. * Three to five years experience in dealing with at-risk youth. * Experience in developing individual student instructional programs. * Current First Aid Card with C.P.R. endorsement or the willingness to obtain one. * Competency in the use of computer software and hardware. * Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. * Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum and school objectives and the needs and abilities of student. * Ability to integrate and differentiate instruction in a variety of subjects to address the diverse student population. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Classroom Teacher: * Meets regular and predictable attendance requirements. * Plans for and guides the learning process to help students achieve program objectives. * Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems. * Evaluates each student's development in the course being taught, prepares progress reports and reports grades as required. * Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment and maintains a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning. * Establishes a cooperative relationship with all assigned students. * Implements useful diagnostic and progress assessment measures. * Selects and uses effective instructional methods and learning materials. * Cooperates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities to ensure student safety and welfare. * Maintains open lines of communication with parents/guardians and school counselors through a variety of means to further the individual student's progress. * Maintains professional appearance as defined in MUL Employee Handbook. * Maintains a professional relationship with students, Parents/guardians, and staff members. * Engages in professional growth activities through an ongoing program of job-related knowledge and skill development. * Works collaboratively to achieve the overall purposes of the school program. * Participates in staff/cluster/department, and agency-wide staff meetings in a punctual manner. * Must be aware of many cultural and ethnic groups in the school and be willing to enroll in agency or district cultural-awareness programs. * Holds parent conferences to discuss the individual student’s progress and interpret the school program.
