Guthrie Theater presents
important August Wilson Play: April 22-May 18
Reality and mysticism collide in August Wilson’s Gem of
the Ocean. Set in Pittsburgh in 1904 we are introduced to Aunt Esther, a
285-year-old fiery matriarch. A cleanser of souls, she gives strength, hope, and
solace to African Americans who find themselves on her door step. As they
struggle to find their place in a free United States, Aunt Esther serves as a
connection to their African ancestors, history and traditions. When she meets
Citizen Barlow, a young man from Alabama in a state of great spiritual turmoil,
she takes him on a journey to the mythic City of Bones at the bottom of the sea.
It is on this fantastical journey he makes startling discoveries about guilt,
duty and redemption.
The Guthrie is proud to present this Penumbra Theatre production on the McGuire
Proscenium Stage. Called “the greatest stage poet since Tennessee Williams” by
the New York Times, Wilson depicted the human condition like no other playwright
of his time. His legacy lives on through his crowning achievement: a cycle of 10
plays chronicling the African American experience in the United States. Don’t
miss this legendary experience — the 9th play in Wilson’s 20th Century Cycle.
